Transform Your Desk Into a Dreamy Workspace

Transform Your Desk Into a Dreamy Workspace

For many of us (myself included) having a desk isn’t just a design element in a home, it’s an object that often needs to be fully functional and conducive to tackling a number of projects including paying bills, catching up on work emails, working on creative projects, etc. Luckily there’s a way to meet in the middle of form and function, and create your own workspace that can spark creativity while keeping you feeling focused and organized — and, of course, is still really cute. Here a few things you can stash on or in your desk that will transform it into a place you’ll actually want to work.

There’s a fine line between creating a zen mood and putting yourself to sleep, which you definitely don’t want when there’s work to be done! Utilize aromatherapy to get your senses working with you, not against you. Whereas essential oils like lavender can lull you to dreamland (not now!), vetiver and grapefruit will calm you but keep you focused on the task at hand. Pick up a slow-burning candle spiked with either (or both!) of these. Major tip: to save space, try an oil diffuser ring that sits on your light bulb. It’ll be out of sight, but not out of scent.

Certain plants can cleanse the air in your home, which will help boost your health and brain-power. Ficus, snake plants, and spider plants all love indirect light, which makes them great for indoor use, and they remove certain pollutants. Keep a small one in a pretty planter or pot that can sit on your desk. If you’re short on surface space, choose a big guy that can live beside it. Those without a green thumb might also have better luck keeping a succulent alive, like aloe vera. They're easy to take care of and improve air quality.

Whether you need to keep words of motivation, photos of friends and family, or clippings of inspiration nearby, try tacking them up on a burlap bulletin board above your desk.

Use dividers in your drawer or desktop to keep like things with like, so they’re easy to locate and organized. If you need to keep certain supplies, like pens or post-its, nearby, consider a sleek bamboo organizer that sits next to your computer. For things you don’t need as easy access to, but want to keep tidy nonetheless, get one that sits comfortably in a drawer.

When you spend a lot of time at your desk, it’s easy for clutter to gather there, which is why it’s helpful — and aesthetically pleasing — to keep a nesting bowl (or two) or pinch pot on your desktop to catch little odds and ends like hair ties, jewelry, or the random contents of your pockets.

Think about what will help you get work done. Is it a financial advice book? A journal? Some magazines that you need to refer back to? Invest in some stylish mid-century bookends that can keep whatever books you need nearby neat and organized. They're stylish and sculptural — which also adds to an overall clutter-free aesthetic.
