Woohoo! Today I’m finally sharing our laundry & mud room update! We started working on this project in January when we emptied and painted what had become our catch-all room. I was desperate for a welcoming laundry & mud room, since most guests enter through this room, and it’s their first impression of our home. It had been seriously neglected for almost 4 years, and was always full of out-of-season shoes, laundry, empty cardboard boxes and other recyclables, tools, and anything else you can imagine. It wasn’t cozy, there was no organization, and it was a mess.
We started by clearing everything out and painting. We used Chantilly Lace by Benjamin Moore, one of my favorite “white” paint colors. The project hit a standstill when I couldn’t find the perfect bench. I was searching for a super simple rustic antique bench, no longer than 48″, which proved itself a difficult task. I almost bit the bullet and spent way too much money on a bench made of reclaimed wood, but am so thankful that I resisted and decided to continue waiting. Fast forward 4 months, and I found the perfect antique bench at Lucketts Spring Market for a fraction of the price. It took another month to figure out other things.
I’m so pleased with the final look! Bright white walls make such a difference in a small space, and this room is only about 10 x 7. We (read: mostly Joe) made the shelves by the washer and dryer and the beautiful coat racks. For the shelving, we used hardwood that I stained. And the brackets are just super affordable brackets from Home Depot spray painted gold. I love the way these turned out. And for the coat racks, we used 100 year-old wood we found in our garage (the previous owner replaced some of the boards in our attic), and I ordered antique hooks from Community Forklift. Voila!
Decorating and hiding things away in baskets was my favorite part of putting together the new space! The beautiful framed artwork came from a new favorite local stop: Shop Nostalgia. If you live locally, you should check out the shop; it’s a perfectly curated collection of vintage clothing and accessories and antique pieces for the home! The rug was a auction purchase from a few years ago that was actually hidden and forgotten about in my attic. My friend Wendy says to “shop your house” and I was so excited to rediscover this rug! And let’s talk about that laundry basket! It’s made from strands of mint green and white recycled plastic and bunches of paisa grass by artisans in Bangladesh. I just love the leather handles, and it’s large enough to fit the laundry my family manages to produce every day! The basket is from Ten Thousand Villages, which is a nonprofit with stores all over the nation (and locally in Alexandria, Richmond, Harrisonburg, and Charlottesville). I’m still trying to dream up and design the perfect shoe storage solution. We like to keep lots of shoes by our back door (gardening, work boots, and a few pairs of our most frequently worn shoes), which tends to lead to an ugly mess. The girls have their shoes in metal baskets from Target, but I’m at a loss for shoe storage for me and Joe, especially since his shoes are so large. And I don’t want the shoes to take up half the laundry room. Any ideas or suggestions would be MUCH appreciated!
I love how little touches like repainting walls and hanging a few shelves and a little bit of organization can completely transform a room. I find so much joy walking through our back door into the laundry and mud room! And now we have a space to hang guests’ jackets and for them to sit and take off their shoes! I hope that our guests feel welcomed when they walk through our door!
