Oftentimes, I lie awake at night, wondering about all the online home decor stores I might be missing out on for lack of knowing (kidding, I sleep like the dead, but during my waking hours, all bets are off). Like most of you reading this, I have my shopping standbys (Target, World Market and IKEA, I'm looking at you), but my goodness does there exist a wide world of amazing furniture and decor websites that just don't see enough play. If you're looking for some new retailers to freshen up your home, here are 16 of my current favorites (and please, help me sleep better by offering up some of your own suggestions in the comments below).
What it is: Founded in Australia nearly three years ago, this happy little homewares brand has quickly expanded, selling to the US, UK, Canada and New Zealand.
What you'll find: Smile-inducing furniture, textiles, bedding, kitchen and dining goods, rugs, all in soft pastel hues, peppy prints.
What it is: The California-based home goods store aims to be "your SOURCE for 'everything cool for the home.'" I'm a big fan of their design aesthetic, carrying brands such as Vitra, Blu Dot, Hay, Iitalia, and beyond.
What you'll find: Just about everything for the home, but with a modern, Danish aesthetic, like the clever Covet desk shown above.
What it is: Honestly, I can't believe I've never stumbled upon Structube before. The Canadian company (which sells to the US), has fantastically on-trend and contemporary furniture and decor for prices that literally almost blew my mind.
What you'll find: Fully upholstered beds, dining and living room furniture, lighting, office systems, art and accessories...all for prices comparable to Target and IKEA.
What it is: To me, TRNK is like a quiet moment that feels like a total luxury. It's for those that want a beautiful, well-edited home with no frills willing to invest in quality. From the owners: "We founded TRNK in 2013 for others like us - those who share a similar appreciation for the home, but don't represent the common notion of domesticity. The site is a collection of our favorite products, stories, inspirations and ideas - sourced from around the globe, but all sharing a single, carefully-considered point of view."
What you'll find: Ultra curated designer furnishings and decor that are simply chic (albeit a bit of an investment).
What it is: I credit one of my fellow AT staffers for opening my eyes to Room 68. I didn't know I needed a beautiful power strip (made of white ash wood, colored cables and leather straps), until I visited the site.
What you'll find: Aforementioned beautiful power strip, as well as other home decor created by new and emerging talents from all across the globe both online and in their Provincetown, Massachusetts, showroom.
What it is: An aggregate of other well-known sites, like Urban Outfitters, West Elm, Fornasetti, and Thomas Paul, but you'll get it all to you with free shipping (and free returns if you decide you don't love what you purchased).
What you'll find: Nearly everything offered from Urban Outfitters, cheeky lighting from Menu, globally inspired goods from Local + Lejos, and so much more.
What it is: If the name wasn't obvious, it's a company that sells really pretty legs for your furniture, specifically to charge up the style on your IKEA pieces (my KALLAX bookshelf is currently awaiting attention from me to attach these that just came in the mail the other day!).
What you'll find: Furniture legs to retrofit your existing pieces (though they have also started offering tops and legs to create new furniture altogether), delivered direct from Stockholm, Sweden (with super fast shipping!).
What it is: The British fashion and homewares company reminds me of West Elm, but you know, if West Elm had a bit of an English accent.
What you'll find: A catalog of furniture and home goods that'll make you scream "I want it all!", except sadly, for us stateside, the offerings are limited. Anything marked "UK Delivery Only" won't be able to the US market (at least not yet).
What it is: This Virginia-based company is the home wares equivalent of that ridiculously stylish friend of yours that only ever wears a white T-shirt and jeans but always looks better than you without trying (you know the one...).
What you'll find: My favorite offerings on Need Supply Co. are their tabletop and smaller decorative objects, though it's easy to covet all the office supplies from Appointed, as well.
What it is: Leif is like a B12 shot for your home—a dose of energy that makes you want to dance a little. Founded in 2011 by Stacy Anne Longenecker in Brooklyn, Leif is all about presenting "the most special, beautiful things that add a unique touch to day-to-day living."
What you'll find: High volume ceramics and baskets, colorful table linens, vibrant pillows and throws, even jewelry and fashion accessories.
What it is: Do the Swedes ever design a bad piece of furniture? From the looks of Hem's catalog, the answer is a resounding "no". Every piece they sell is an original design.
What you'll find: Stunning wood furniture like the stool above, contemporary sofas and poufs, lighting, rugs and tons of accessories that make me want to start decorating my home from scratch.
What it is: Really beautiful home decor that also happens to be sustainable and responsibly produced.
What you'll find: A plethora of organic bedding, reclaimed and refined barnwood furniture, sofas made of 100% organic/renewable/recyclable materials, and beyond.
What it is: The perfect place to shop if you want to bring the hipness of Brooklyn home (even if you live in Boca Raton ::cough like me :).
What you'll find: Marble clocks, concrete table lamps, shower curtains that are almost too good looking to actually shower next to, and a huge assortment of some of the best shelving I've ever seen.
What it is: Another gorgeous Scandinavian shop that feels impossibly too cool for me.
What you'll find: Scandi-style tabletop, furniture, bed and bath, lighting, fashion (and even things for your stylish little munchkins' rooms).
What it is: I've long followed the lifestyle blog of Mandy Kellogg Rye. She has impeccable style, a beautiful outlook on life, and I want everything she ever writes about. She also has an online shop full of treasures, and this is it.
What you'll find: Amazing gifts, bar ware, art, kitchen goods and tabletop, all with a fresh, happy vibe.
Greycork EDITOR'S NOTE as of 4/3/17: Unfortunately, we've been informed that Greycork is no longer in business.
What it is: A flat-pack furniture company that might give IKEA a run for it's money.
What you'll find: Well, they only have seven SKUs at the moment (with several variations on the products offered), and everything is completely sold out (doesn't that make you want it more??), but I couldn't complete this list without the brand, so keep an eye out for new releases.
